Boswellia and Commiphora, both in the Burseraceae family, are well known for the important aromatic resins, which have been used traditionally for religious as well as medicinal purposes. Today, frankincense and myrrh are commonly used from perfumery, to cosmetics and medicines but also play a main role in modern aromatherapy.
The aromatic resin used in incense originates from the Horn of Africa and the southern Arabian peninsula. It has a long history dating back thousands of years.
Frankincense has sacred symbolism, also mentioned in the bible. In ancient times it was worth equal to or greater than gold. However in current times, the frankincense oil has earned the title of king of oils.
